We ( myself, 3 sons & 3 grand children) are planning a trip to Delta Utah this week end (April 1 & 2) We have been to the B L M fossil areas but would like to visit U dig Fossils this time. Will you be open and if not is there any place we can pay the fees and gain access to the site?
A:
Yes, U-dig will be open April 1 & 2. Just drive directly to the quarry during our open times and a u-dig operator will be there to assist you.
I'd first like to thank all remarks contributors. ALL remarks are helpful when making choices for trips. I'm ready to visit! Please tell me when you think is the best time to visit? I don't live terribly far away and probably will plan a vacation through this area to camp and fossil hunt. I have all the tools/supplies for such an adventure. Thank you for all your replies. Regards.

The site is in the desert and since you do not live nearby you can best judge when the best time to visit would be. If I were to go again it would be in May or June. Of course I am not sure it's still cold there at that time. As for tools the site does provide hammers, chisels, buckets and eye protection. The shale is broken so its easy to split pieces. If you want to dig into a wall there also was a large pry bar availabile.
How is access for someone with 2 knee replacement? What is the level of difficulty in getting to the fossils?

You can collect in many different locations at the quarry. Some collecting areas are easy to access while other collecting areas have more aggressive terrain. Basically, there are opportunities to find the trilobites in numerous locations at the quarry and you can choose the difficulty of the terrain you want to venture into. The U-Dig operators working at the quarry are there to assist you. They have helped people in wheelchairs, people who cannot walk on unlevel ground, and people on on crutches collect in the past. Also, the parking lot is approximately 300 yards from the quarry so there is not too much of walk. If needed, you can even park closer to the quarry. Q:
Are the fossils easy to collect?
A:
The fossils in our quarry are found in a limestone shale that cleaves easily into flat sheets. Fossilized trilobites lay nearly flat along the splitting planes of the shale....
