I live on the East Coast. I last visited Del Mar in 2009. Returned in March 2024. Drove up to Oceanside; 101 was unrecognizable. None of the charm from 2009 was there. Shops, commerce, chrome, cars, …Full review by MyNightAtMauds

Basically 6 - 8 hours, depending on which route you take and traffic, Then you need to add gas stops, which should be planned ahead of time as the price varies by as much as $3 per gallon depending on route, time of year and road closures. Check out Gas Buddy for prices. I-5 is usually the fastest (time and posted speed, limit) but if you want ocean views and such this is not the route. I-5 goes through CA famous farming and agro communities. Hwy 101 - the 1 and the famous PCH will take the longest, but does have some of the most beautiful and breathtaking views and it is worth taking a few times in one’s life. Take a few moments at various beaches to stretch your legs and dip your toes in the ocean. The water does get warmer as you go south. Happy travels.

Hwy 101 is safe and there are petroleum stations… however! That time of year the weather can be very wet, windy and wild causing mud slides and road closures. Gas / petrol prices are commonly higher, as it takes more time for the big rigs to get there, and in some places by as much as $3 USD per gallon than traveling the 5 (Interstate 5 also called the I5). Not to mention hwy 101 does not to go Vegas. The views, especially in winter, can be awe inspiring though. The ocean gets large turbulent waves that are nothing short of stunning. A faster route from “the Bay Area” to Vegas, that is safe and has better gas prices is I5. The drive is between 8 - 10 hours, taking I5, and if you use the app Gas Buddy you can figure out where to stop for gas, the prices, amenities and how others feel about the place. Once you get on I5 south, you drive to Bakersfield, take the 58 towards Barstow, then the 15 towards Las Vegas. Safe travels.

Depending on you time frame, there’s lots to see, including the redwoods, Paul Bunyan. Lots of small wood shops, I would recommend stopping at a couple. If you want to take side trips off of 101, spend the night in Santa Rosa or Petaluma and go to Bodega Bay. (Movie “The Birds) and a few miles north on highway 1, is Fort Ross. In Petaluma is the Old Adobe fort, it was General Vallejo Ranchero, a short drive to the east in Sonoma is where the Bear Flag revolution started. A bit east is Napa, and then you can go south pick up 121 and take 12 back (Infineon race track used to be sears point racetracks is at the Intersection ) to 101 just south of Novato. Just off of 101 in Richmond and San Rafael is San Quinten prison and the have tours. If no tours they have a gift shop that death row inmates make items forsale it’s only cash, and exact change so take plenty of 1 dollars bills. There are a couple of roadside America (website) sites just south of Novato and near Corta Madera. Also on 101, near San Rafael is the Marin Civic Center, design by Frank Lloyd Wright, they have tours. As you approach the Golden Gate, you can checkout the viewpoint on the east of the freeway, and west the road takes you up the hill on the west side of the bridge ( Dirty Harry movie scene where the found the girl ) hope that helps
