Sony isn’t the only maker of recordable Blu-ray discs, but since they are the dominant player, others still in that business will probably take notice – there may be a slight initial surge in demand as affected consumers “stock up” – but after the dust settles, recordable Blu-ray discs will disappear not only in the Japanese market but worldwide.

Sony Corp. has said it will stop producing recordable Blu-ray discs as of next month, in what is the latest blow to the physical media industry.

Sony is ending production of recordable Blu-ray, MiniDisc and MD Data disc media, along with MiniDV cassettes, the company announced. Last year, Sony said that it would gradually end production of recordable optical media and production at its Tagajo City plant due to poor sales.

Sony has announced that it will cease production of Blu-ray discs next month. In a statement shared by the company, it announced that "Blu-ray disc media, recording mini discs, recording MD data, mini DV cassettes" will all get the axe in February, confirming towards the end of the announcement that "there will be no successor models".

In the summer of 2024, Sony revealed plans to gradually end Blu-ray production. Now, the company has shared an official announcement on its Japanese website (via Tom’s Hardware ), confirming the final discontinuation of optical storage media.

Sony is officially ending production of recordable Blu-rays. In an announcement from Japan spotted by Tom’s Hardware, Sony Storage Media Solutions said it will stop manufacturing the discs in February, alongside recordable MiniDiscs, MD-Data, and MiniDV cassettes, adding, “there will be no successor models.”

The Sony announcement is just the latest gut punch for Blu-ray fans. It comes on the back of LG revealing that it’s not making new Blu-ray players anymore, joining the likes of Samsung and Opp. Sony also announced that its next gaming console, the PS5 Pro, would not have a disc drive — it’s digital only.
