LOS ANGELES (AP) — Firefighters battled to control a series of major fires in the Los Angeles area early Thursday that have killed five people, ravaged communities from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena and sent thousands of people frantically fleeing their homes.

Multiple wildfires, including the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, are raging across southern California early Thursday, leaving at least 5 dead and burning more than 25,000 acres, officials say.

Billy Crystal lost the Pacific Palisades house where he had lived since 1979. Paris Hilton watched her Malibu beach mansion burn down on live TV.

The massive Palisades Fire broke out in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon, prompting mandatory evacuations affecting tens of thousands of people and highway closures. Later Tuesday, the Eaton Fire broke out in the foothills of Pasadena on the other side of Los Angeles County.

At least 5 are dead and thousands have fled their homes as multiple wildfires fueled by Santa Ana winds blasted across Southern California.

The deadly fires have destroyed at least 1,000 homes, businesses, and other structures, according to Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone.

The home of Vice President Kamala Harris in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles has been placed under an evacuation order by local authorities, making her one among tens of thousands of Californians whose homes have been threatened by wildfires raging through parts of Los Angeles County.
