The protests began over the reintroduction of a quota scheme since scaled back by Bangladesh's top court that reserved more than half of all government jobs for certain groups, Al Jazeera reported.

The film led to sanctions from the United States against then army chief General Aziz Ahmed and his brother, and sparked retaliation against whistleblowers in Bangladesh, said The Sunday Times report.
