The Malaga area, including the tourist resorts of Marbella, Velez and Estepona, is expected to take the brunt of the extreme weather phenomenon known as a "Dana". Parts of the eastern Valencia area have also been placed on the highest alert, weeks after the area was devastated by flash floods that killed more than 220 people.

Schools will be closed on Wednesay after the national weather agency placed parts of Valencia on red alert on Wednesday night, as well as Catalonia in the northeast and Malaga in the southeast.

Severe thunderstorms and torrential rain have once again battered coastal Spain, causing flooding and evacuations just two weeks after the country experienced deadly flooding in Valencia and other nearby communities.

The UK's Foreign Office has also issued a warning to travellers with more rain forecast to hit the flood-stricken country.
