The Farmer's Almanac states that the name is derived from the early spring bloom of a North American wildflower called " Phlox subulata ," commonly known moss phlox. "This flower, often called 'moss pink,' was in full bloom around April’s full moon," the Farmer's Almanac said.

The first full moon of spring, known as the “Pink Moon,” will appear in the sky this Saturday, April 12. It will reach its brightest point at 7:22 p.m. CT, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. This Pink Moon is also a “micromoon.
