He first saw a Matisse in 1943, and was hooked -- over the years, traveling as far as Paris and St. Petersburg to view the older artist’s work. But Diebenkorn never sought to imitate Matisse.

Slowly, Matisse’s whole approach to art began to change. “Studio, Quai Saint-Michel” was the last in a series of four canvases depicting Matisse’s studio overlooking the Seine.

Matisse’s “Odalisque” hangs in the museum’s permanent collection display, next to other odalisques — or reclining nudes — painted in the same period by Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky.
