Prince Albert's father, Duke Ernest of Coburg, was a brother of Queen Victoria's mother, the widowed Duchess of Kent. Since Albert was a second son, he would have no inheritance and no occupation.
Her marriage to Prince Albert in 1840 soon illustrated the Palace's shortcomings. A serious problem for the newly married couple was the absence of any nurseries and too few bedrooms for visitors.
