Lawmakers passed a bill through committee Thursday that would give school districts throughout New Mexico the choice of replacing traditional diesel school buses with zero emission alternative fuel buses.

Some North Dakota school districts are part of a movement that has embraced electric school buses, but the federal funding shakeup carried out by the Trump administration leaves administrators in limbo.

School leaders are raising concerns about New York’s mandate requiring districts to purchase only electric school buses starting in 2027. Superintendents Thomas Douglas and Kai D’Alleva recently argued the policy is financially and logistically unfeasible due to high costs, inadequate infrastructure, and technological limitations.
