Recently, Anthony Mackie spoke out about his — and, by extension, Sam Wilson’s — take on Captain America, which caused something of a fandom uproar. His comments, however, only prove that he understands his character.

The actor, who plays Sam Wilson/Captain America in the upcoming film "Captain America: Brave New World" film, took to Instagram on Tuesday with a statement he shared in a story about what the role means to him and expressing his appreciation for those who serve and have served the country.

Some people felt that since "America" is in the character's name, he directly represents American values of "freedom, justice, and standing up for what's right" even though we can't honestly admit the country as a whole is upholding these moral standards.
