The NFL franchise tag can be a handy tool for teams to retain players, but not all are set up to use the designation this offseason.

NFL franchise tag window opens Tuesday and runs until 4 p.m. ET on March 4. During that time frame, each team is allowed to tag one player who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. Doing so would keep the player with the franchise for the 2025 season.

The franchise tag earnings are based on each position’s top five annual salaries. If a player is tagged multiple times, the franchise tag salary increases each time.

The window for NFL teams to place the franchise tag on players opens at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday and they must do it by the 4 p.m. March 4 deadline. If the Bengals place the tag on Higgins, it doesn’t necessarily mean he will play in Cincinnati next year.
