Fitbit failed to report overheating incidents involving its Ionic watches in which customers suffered serious burns, safety regulator said.

Fitbit will pay $12.25 million after reaching a settlement with the Consumer Product Safety Commission for not reporting a known defect in a now-recalled product.

The company recalled 1.7 million Ionic watches in 2022 after reports of overheating and two third-degree burns.

The civil penalty follows 115 reports of overheating, including injuries ranging from second to third-degree burns.
