Two million people are told to evacuate in Japan after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest ever, hits Russia's eastern coast.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami alerts. Warnings have now been lifted and no major damage has been reported.

“Residents and visitors who evacuated may return home at this time.
