A Wichita Republican strategist credits mail voting for the defeat of a $450 million school bond. But a bill advancing through the Kansas Legislature would curb how many mail ballots get counted.

Unofficial results updated Wednesday by the Sedgwick County election office show bond issue opponents leading by just less than 300 votes, with potentially up to 4,000 mail and provisional ballots still to be counted.

"We hoped we'd have a very clear answer by now, which we don't," Wichita Public Schools superintendent Kelly Bielefeld said.
