Need lower light safer lantern for barn and walking, metal with bail handle, Rayo or hole in center for general purpose light, brighter than a straight wick, but still not fussy and easy to take care of, Colman or Aladin for bright light, super bright, super hot, delicate, take quite of bit of fussing with until you get it down, and not cheap.

Aug 5, 2016 · Outside lamps get a shot of citronella oil. The risk of clogging a wick with a little died citronella oil is far outweighed by the bug fighting ability of the lamp outside. Note that Rayo (B&H, etc) center draft lamps seem to be more draft tolerant than Aladdin.

Jan 19, 2025 · If SHTF, it might be handy to be able to burn cooking oil, or you may want to eat it. It is a good use for rancid, bad, oil. Do not use kerosene or gasolene for the fluid or you will have your own personal Molotov cocktail and that is a no no in your house when lit. Hard to knock success as it was the only lamp light for a few thousand years.

Aug 5, 2016 · The adults used the oil lamps for light and in the kitchen etc we used the "Aladdin" type with a hollow wick that works almost like a mantle on a gas type lamp. It is about as bright as a 100 watt light bulb and puts out a lot of heat.

You can still use the lamp with some missing teeth. I have a luck few that have all 8 teeth, some with 6, 4, 2 teeth that will all still move the wick up and down. It's like steering an old truck with 3/4 turn of play in the steering, but it works.
