A diocese was a division of a prefecture of the Roman Empire. In the reorganization of Diocletian and Constantine, the Roman Empire was divided into twelve dioceses. As the church expanded out from the cities, it adopted the use of the word “diocese,” and ecclesiastical dioceses tended to correspond to civil units.

Southern Virginia, Diocese of. The 1892 General Convention voted to divide the Diocese of Virginia. The new diocese was the Diocese of Southern Virginia. It held its primary convention at St. Paul's Church, Lynchburg. The 1919 General Convention voted to divide the Diocese of Southern Virginia.

The primary convention of the diocese was held at St. Andrew's Church, Roswell, New Mexico, Feb. 10-12, 1953. On Apr. 28, 1973, the name was changed to the Diocese of the Rio Grande. On Nov. 26, 1978, St. Clement's Church, El Paso, became the Pro-Cathedral Church of St. Clement. The diocese has a cathedral and a pro-cathedral.

On Oct. 15, 1880, the General Convention divided it into the Missionary District of Washington and the Missionary District of Oregon. The primary convention of the Diocese of Oregon met at Trinity Church, Portland, Sept. 11-13, 1889. The General Convention of 1907 divided the Diocese of Oregon and created the Missionary District of Eastern Oregon.
