"EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW" - These words, written above the main entrance to the Supreme Court Building, express the ultimate responsibility of the Supreme Court of the United States. The Court is the highest tribunal in the Nation for all cases and controversies arising under the Constitution or the laws of the United States.

The term “opinions” as used on this website refers to several types of writing by the Justices. The most well-known opinions are those released or announced in cases in which the Court has heard oral argument.

Roberts, Jr., is the 17th Chief Justice of the United States, and there have been 104 Associate Justices in the Court’s history.
Current Members - Supreme Court of the United States
He served as a law clerk for Judge Henry J. Friendly of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1979–1980, and as a law clerk for then-Associate Justice William H. Rehnquist of the Supreme Court of the United States during the 1980 Term.

Oral Arguments - Supreme Court of the United States
The Court holds oral argument in about 70-80 cases each year. The arguments are an opportunity for the Justices to ask questions directly of the attorneys representing the parties to the case, and for the attorneys to highlight arguments that they view as particularly important.
