From my personal experience (across two cars) The ipod mini and iPod3 (first 40gb with the row of buttons across the top of the scroll wheel are "old" ipod software. Anything after that is "new software."

Jun 6, 2007 · i tried restoring the ipod with mac (10.5.4) and iTunes 7.7.1 to no avail, then i used disk mode, which worked until it asked me to restore the iPod -- then it was the same old same old. so i then proceeded to get out my 9 year old thinkpad running windows xp pro and iTunes 7.7.1, restored the iPod with the thinkpad, then the loop started again.
